MeraNews Network, Ahmedabad: Congress leader Kapil Sibal said he will meet Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) convenor Hardik Patel again after three days to discuss the matter of reservation for the community under the Other Backward Class (OBC) category.

“It was a very healthy meeting which went on for around two-and-a-half hours. Both of us presented our concerns before each other,” Sibal said at a press conference in the early hours of Thursday after meeting Patel late on Wednesday. “We will discuss possible solutions in another meeting three days later.”

“We will do whatsoever possible if their demand falls under the Constitution of India,” the Congress leader said.

The Patidar community has been demanding reservation in government jobs and educational institutions, conducting agitations and rallies across the state since 2015. The PAAS has been at the forefront of the movement.

Patel last month gave an ultimatum to the Congress party, telling it to clear its stand on reservation by 7 November. He said his organization will decide whether to support the party in the forthcoming Gujarat assembly elections on the basis of its stand.

Gujarat will go to the polls in two phases on 9 and 14 December, and both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress are trying to win the support of the Patidar community, whose support could prove crucial.

Former PAAS leader Reshma Patel, who joined the BJP last month, accused Patel and the Congress of misleading the community. “The meeting at midnight with the Patidars at Congress bhavan is not a meeting, but ticket-fixing with Congress agents and leaders. This is a drama to misguide the community for tickets. The entry of Congress agents in the party is a formal drama. The people have not forgotten the mistakes of 60 years of Congress rule,” she said.
