Meranews, Ahmedabad:  Worldwide well known Reliance Industries Limited’s senior vice president, Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani’s properties, in Janmagar, was sealed on Wednesday by the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation for non-payment of tax due since April 2017.

The corporation has sealed five shops and sent the notice on name of Dhanraj Nathwani though these properties are given on lease and the name has not been changed by the Corporation though the owners had provided the needed documents, said Jamnagar Municipal Commissioner, RB Barad.

Since these are Nathwani’s shops, the news has spread like wild fire in Jamnagar and has become talk of the town.

Later, when the corporation discovered that the lessee ‘Safron lifestyle traders’ are liable to pay the tax, as per their contract, the department had sent a revised notice to them.

The Jamnagar Municipal Corporation has started tax collection drive in the area to collect the unpaid taxes on properties that fall under their jurisdiction. On Wednesday, the officials of the property tax department began to take action against the tax defaulters.

As part of the drive the tax collection department took action and sealed the property owned by Nathwani who has given it on lease to Safron Lifestyle Traders Pvt Ltd who has further given it on rent to United Colors of Benetton.

Nathvani’s property is located on PN road’s ‘Neo square’ consisting of five shops which have been sealed with a notice, mentioning “tax of Rs. 38,779 is unpaid though notice served for the same in month of April, 2017.”

The notice also has the mention; if the unpaid tax amount is not cleared within 15 days it (the property) will be subject to sale to recover the tax.

When Meranews contacted Jamnagar Municipal Commissioner, R B Barad said, “There was a mistake by the property tax department who didn’t change the name of ownership the documents.”

Barad further added “The property is given on rent to United Colors of Benetton, franchise who failed to pay the property tax. The revised notice has been served to the tenant of united Colors of Benetton replacing the earlier order.”

According to the letter sent by Dhanraj Nathwani to the tax officer of Jamnagar Municipal Corporation, seeking explanation “We have given our property on lease to Safron lifestyle traders Pvt Ltd who is liable to pay the property tax as per our contract. There should be property assessment tax number on the name of the occupant (which is Safron Lifestyle Traders Pvt Ltd) then why the notice has been served to me and not the lessee.”
