MeraNews Network, Ahmedabad: Former Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) member Nikhil Savani on Saturday termed Reshma Patel and Varun Patel, who recently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), agents of the ruling party.

Savani, who resigned from the BJP last week, also said that if the Congress wants to be welcomed in Surat, the party must clear its stand on reservation for the Patidar community.

“Once the Congress clears its stand, the Patidar community will decide depending on what benefits it will get,” Savani said.

At a press conference in Ahmedabad, the former PAAS member said, “I want to tell Varun Patel and Reshma Patel not to become tools of the BJP. I too had joined the BJP, but I never said anything that could hurt society. Reshma and Varun Patel have political ambitions, so they will sell our community.”

Savani, who was formerly a close aide of PAAS convenor Hardik Patel, said he will oppose the two new BJP leaders if they decide to contest the forthcoming Gujarat assembly elections.

The BJP and the Congress have both been courting Patidar community leaders, with Hardik Patel saying he will meet Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi soon.

The community has been seeking reservation in government jobs and educational institutes under the Other Backward Class (OBC) category for more than two years now.

Varun Patel has come under fire after an audio clip was widely distributed on social media on Thursday in which he is allegedly heard offering money to PAAS leader Narendra Patel to join the ruling party, with Rs10 lakh in advance and full payment after joining.

Narendra Patel, after joining the BJP for a day, on Monday alleged that Varun Patel and Jitu Vaghani, the BJP’s Gujarat president, offered him the money to defect from the PAAS and showed Rs10 lakh in cash to the media to prove his claim. The PAAS leader has also filed a complaint accusing six leaders of the party, including the aforementioned two, of bribery, cheating, betrayal and intimidation.
