MeraNews Network, Gandhinagar: India’s neighbouring country Pakistan has been invited to take part in the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit to be held at state capital Gandhinagar from January 28 to 20, 2019. This would be the second instance after 2013 where a working delegation from Pakistan will be participating in the global trade summit in Gujarat.

English daily Indian Express reported on Friday that at least seven delegations from different regions of Pakistan are likely to participate in the VGGS 2019. These include two delegations from Faisalabad, and one each from Islamabad, Peshawar, Pakistan’s Punjab, Karachi, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. These delegations have confirmed their participation in the Global Conclave of International Chambers, amongst the 52 participating commerce and trade body delegations from various nations.

In 2013, a 22-member delegation from the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industries had taken part in the VGGS. They took part in the pre-event buyers-sellers meet on January 9 and 10 but left without participating in the main event of the summit on January 12-13 after bilateral tensions arose following the killings of two Indian Army soldiers in ceasefire violation by Pakistan at Mendhar sector in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch. Tensions between the two countries continued to simmer and Pakistan didn’t participate in the next two summits.

But not everyone in the political class was happy with the state government’s decision to extend an invite to Pakistan for the VGGS 2019. The Gujarat Congress said that by inviting Pakistan to take part in the mega-trade jamboree, the government is betraying the 125 crore citizens of the country.

‘The Bharatiya Janata Party abuses Musharraf and Pakistan in their speeches and always insists that the neighbouring country must be dealt with in a language which they understand. So Pm Modi must answer his countrymen now about this move too,” said Congress national spokesperson Manish Doshi.
