MeraNews Network, Rajkot: Kunwarji Bavaliya, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Jasddan Bypolls won the elections with 90268 votes, defeating Congress’ Avsar Nakia by 19985 votes. Nakia got 70283 votes. The Jasdan bypolls, held on December 20, were considered as a litmus test for the BJP after it suffered a rout in the 5 states assembly elections, where it lost power to the Congress in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

Both Bavaliya and Nakia are prominent Koli community leaders and tried their best to influence the voters from their community to vote for them. 63-year old Bavaliya had switched his loyalty to BJP after being with the Congress for five terms in Jasdan. It was his switch that necessitated the bypolls in December.

Nakia got lesser votes than Bavaliya in his own village Aasalpur. He got only 514 votes, while Bavaliya got 764 votes. Nakia, despite being a district panchayat member from Pipardi polled only 664 votes compared to the 2406 votes Bavaliya got. Clearly, Bavaliya’s  prominence in Jasdan has been overwhelming for Nakia.

Bavaliya took out a victory rally on Sunday after the results were announced. Standing atop an open jeep, he waved to the crowed thanking them for their support to him in the polls. Large number of BJP party workers took part in the rally. BJP state President Jitu Vaghani and former MP Bharat Boghra too accompanied Bavaliya in his victory rally.

It is worth noting that Congress had left no stone unturned to try using Bavaliya’s switch to BJP to paint him as a power-hungry traitor and even got Punjab minister and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu to address a rally on the last day of campaigning for Nakia, regaling the crowds with his witty critiques on Bavaliya and the BJP.
