MeraNews Network, Vadodara: President of India Ramnath Kovind, Railway minister Piyush Goyal and Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani will dedicate to the nation, India’s first railway university in Vadodara on Saturday. It is believed to be the brainchild of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to have a premier institute providing professional studies in railway transportation.
The National Rail and Transportation Institute (NRTI) began its operations from the National Academy of Indian Railways campus on September 5, 2018, with 103 students (86 boys and 17 girls) from 20 states of India studying two fully residential undergraduate courses. Apart from being India’s first deemed railway university, it is also the world’s only third such institute. The other two are in China and Russia.
Ashwani Lohani, the chairman of Railway Board of India, is the vice-chancellor of the university. The students of the inaugural batch were given a 50 percent scholarship by the government in their annual fees of Rs 75000. Rs 421 crores have been sanctioned by the Ministry of Railways for the university and its curriculum development for the next 5 years.
As of now, the NRTI is operational from the National Academy of Indian Railways campus, but soon a greenfield campus building will be constructed on the lines of Pratap Vilas Palace. For this, a 100-acre plot has been identified by the Indian Railways at Pipaliya in Waghodia, Vadodara.
The two undergraduate courses being offered at the university are BSc in Transport Technology and BBA in Transportation Management, for a period of three years. It plans to start its master’s degree program in the academic year 2019-20. Areas like Transportation and System Design, Transport Systems Engineering, Transport Policy, and Economics will be covered under these programs.
