MeraNews Network, Ahmedabad: Making a bid to form a grand coalition to contest the Gujarat assembly elections, the state unit of the Congress party has sent open invitations to Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) convenor Hardik Patel, Other Backward Class (OBC) leader Alpesh Thakor and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani, as well as Chhotubhai Vasava, the sole Janata Dal (United) member of the state legislative assembly (MLA).
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, Gujarat Congress chief Bharatsinh Solanki said his party is ready to offer tickets to the leaders of the three communities as well as Vasava, and also invited workers of political and social outfits in the state to join the party.
Soon after Solanki made his offer, Patel said he did not want to contest the elections.
“I don’t want to contest elections. We want our rights and justice, and we are fighting against arrogance. We will win,” the PAAS convenor wrote on Twitter.
Meanwhile, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Jayant Patel, alias Boskey, said he was ready to form a coalition with the Gujarat Congress.
When asked about the cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha elections for three seats in Gujarat in August, in which Patel is alleged to have voted for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Amit Shah, the NCP leader said such incidents happen in politics. “But if the Congress comes up with an invitation, we will not have any problems in forming a coalition with it,” he said.
