MeraNews Network, Gandhinagar: The chain-snatching menace has been plaguing the major cities of Gujarat since a very long time. Many times, these incidents even put the lives of the victim and the people on the spot in danger. Keeping in mind the safety of women, the state government has decided to bring in an ordinance which will ensure those caught in chain-snatching and similar thefts will get imprisoned for 5 to 10 years and fined Rs 25,000.

Currently, chain-snatching is a crime punishable by 3 years of imprisonment in the state. With the quantum of punishment is increased, the number of chain-snatching incidents is expected to go down. This ordinance will include a maximum 7-year imprisonment and a penalty of Rs 25,000 for the person who caught in the act. If the victim faces injury during the chain-snatching attempt, then under 379(a) 4, then the provision of further 3 years of imprisonment has been made.

State home minister Pradipsinh Jadeja said that in order to put an end to incidents of chain-snatching and other such forms of theft and keeping in mind the safety of women, the government has decided to make additions to Indian Penal Code and pass an ordinance for the same, which will make the law stricter for those caught in the act.
