MeraNews Network, Gandhinagar: Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday announced a reduction in the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 2.5 per liter. The new prices will be effective from 12 AM-midnight. Immediately after the announcement, Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, in a tweet declared that the Gujarat government would additionally reduce the price of petrol and diesel by Rs 2.5 per liter. Thus petrol and diesel will cost Rs 5 lesser in the state starting tomorrow.
Fuel prices have been skyrocketing since many days give the rise in international crude prices. The government has been facing flak from the opposition and citizens alike since petrol prices had crossed the Rs 80 per liter threshold. Addressing a press conference on Thursday afternoon, FM Jaitley said that the government would reduce the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 1.5 per liter and the oil companies would decrease the prices by Re 1 per liter. He further appealed to the states to bring a reduction of an equivalent sum in the excise duty levied on the fuel.
The excise cut on petrol diesel announced by FM today will become effective from midnight of today. We urge States also to announce their cut in VAT with effect from 12 midnight today, if possible, so that the consumers get full benefit of reduction immediately.
