MeraNews Network, Ahmedabad: A petition in Supreme Court by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) DIG Manish Kumar Sinha seeking its intervention in a case filed by CBI director Alok Verma, has opened a can of worms where it was revealed that union minister of state for coals and mines Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary had accepted a bribe of a ‘few crore rupees’. The bribe, paid in June 2018, was a part of the extortion racket run by certain senior officers investigating the Moin Qureshi money laundering case.

Haribhai Chaudhary is a Lok Sabha MP of BJP representing the Banaskantha constituency of Gujarat. According to a report in The Wire, the bribe was paid to Chaudhary through one Vipul from Ahmedabad, reportedly to the tune of Rs 2 crores, which was revealed in an inquiry by the CBI from a call that was intercepted between a Congress MLA from Hyderabad and businessman Satish Sana in the first fortnight of June 2018. Chaudhary had accepted the bribe to intervene on behalf of Sana in the investigation against him for his involvement in the money laundering charges against meat exporter Moin Qureshi. Sinha’s petition also claimed that National Security Advisor to the government Ajit Doval had blocked crucial investigations into the matter.

The Scroll reported that Chaudhary has denied the allegations of corruption against him are baseless and malicious and if the claims are to be proven true, he would quit politics. In the feud between CBI director Alok Verma and special director Rakesh Asthana, DIG Sinha was investigating the FIR against Asthana and was also supervising the infamous PNB scam involving celebrity jeweller Nirav Modi.

The petitioner, DIG Sinha was seeking urgent hearing of his plea by the Supreme Court, claiming that he has some documents pertaining to his claim which would shock them. He claimed that he was transferred to Nagpur arbitrarily with malafide and motivated intentions as his investigations had revealed cogent evidence against some powerful people in the administration and government. The apex court ruled out his petition for an urgent hearing.
