Ahmedabad: The State Monitoring Cell on Saturday arrested the Aravalli district’s Shamlaji Police Station Police Sub-Inspector MB Gadhvi and two police constables for failing to file a complaint of smuggling after they had seized a liquor-laden truck in Malpur in early April this year. All the three cops were brought to Gandhinagar Sector-21 Police Station for further investigation and interrogation.

On April 2, the State Monitoring Cell was informed about the seizure of a liquor-laden truck by Shamlaji Police, which was being illegally smuggled into the state near Malpur. It was further revealed that the cops had kept the seized vehicle and liquor in their custody, but didn’t register any complaint of smuggling and prohibition in their station diary or FIR book.

When the monitoring cell officials asked for an explanation regarding the same, the cops told them that they had to rush to quell a communal clash involving Dalits nearby and thus couldn’t immediately do the necessary paperwork. An investigation was initiated after the DGP office was informed about this. It was revealed by the investigation that the station PSI and his constables were in constant touch with the bootlegger, whose liquor was seized by them, through telephonic conversations.

It was clear to the monitoring cell officials that the cops had lied to them and had kept the liquor truck in their custody to strike a deal with the bootlegger to release the contraband. Sources have informed that the Aravalli superintendent of Police and the local crime branch were aware of this catch and PSI Gadhvi and his cops were instructed not to officially register any complaint in this regards.

The higher authorities who are suspected to be hand in glove, in this case, have rubbished these claims of their involvement.
