Mumbai: Honda has launched the all-new Amaze in India, over four months after the square-jawed SUV-ish looking sedan first made an appearance at the 2018 Auto Expo. Honda has priced the Amaze aggressively to take on the king of the segment, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire.
Built on a heavily modified platform of the last-gen Brio/Amaze, it has been stretched in almost every direction to free up more interior space. If the last-gen Honda Amaze felt comfy inside, this one - which is 5mm longer, 15mm wider and has a 65mm longer wheelbase, is like a limousine.
The Honda Amaze will stand out amongst the competition, which mainly includes the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Xcent and Volkswagen Ameo, thanks to its SUV-inspired angular design. Highlights include a bold fascia with a large ‘Solid-Wing’ grille applique, large headlamps (which sadly do not get projector units), a sculpted bumper, 15-inch alloy wheels, split taillamps, and an overall boxy design. The Amaze does get Honda signature design elements all around, with inspiration taken from larger sedans like the Civic and the Accord, but has its own unique design theme too.
Inside, the Amaze follows a theme that mimics the bold exterior design. Beige has been used extensively to create a sense of luxury and space, with black used to highlight features. The dashboard design makes the car feel wide and spacious, while everything - from the centre screen, A/C control unit, large steering, watch-face like dials in the instrument cluster add premiumness to the cabin which was missing in the older car. Even the boot, at 420 litres is class-leading.
The new Amaze gets Honda’s 7.0-inch ‘DigiPad 2.0’ touchscreen infotainment system which is much better than the one found on the Honda City, and in some respects better than the Smartplay system on the Maruti Suzuki Dzire. It also gets both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity suite. Sadly, it can be had with the top-of-the-line VX variants only, with the others having to make do with a 2-DIN non-touch multimedia system.
Other notable features include rear parking sensors, rear parking camera, cruise control, automatic climate control, push start-stop ignition, height adjustable driver’s seat, tilt-adjustable steering, electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs and keyless entry. While the Amaze does not get rear A/C vents, it has a larger compressor than before which we found effective enough to cool the cabin down faster. In terms of safety features, the 2018 Honda Amaze comes with dual front airbags, ABS+EBD and ISOFIX child seat anchors as standard across the range.
The petrol-powered range of the new Honda Amaze gets the same drivetrain as before - consisting of a 1.2-litre i-VTEC naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder motor developing 90PS/110Nm paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission (19.5kmpl, claimed FE) or a CVT (19kmpl). The diesel-powered variants should find more takers this time, especially with the addition of a CVT automatic transmission. While the 1.5-litre i-DTEC turbocharged 4-cylinder motor develops 100PS/200Nm when paired with a 5-speed manual transmission (27.4kmpl), it has been de-tuned to 80PS/160Nm to work with the new CVT (23.8kmpl).
To cash in on the initial buzz, Honda is offering a special introductory price on the Amaze for the first 20,000 confirmed bookings. Honda is also promising a better ownership experience by offering a standard warranty cover of 3 years/unlimited kilometres on the new Amaze, along with a longer service interval of 1 year/10,000km. Two accessories packages are available, costing Rs 4999 and Rs 9999 respectively.
