Prashant Dayal, Ahmedabad: A professor with Delhi University and an officer with the Indian Revenue Service, Nirlipt Rai have donned different hats before joining the Indian Police Service in 2010. He was posted in Himmatnagar during his probation period in the police service. Back then, Prafful Patel was the state home minister. Rai was made the assistant police commissioner in the Ahmedabad Crime Branch upon the completion of his probation period. A year later, he was promoted as the deputy police commissioner of Ahmedabad Zone-7.

During that period, he was instructed by the then police commissioner of Ahmedabad Shivanand Jha to conduct a raid on the dens of infamous bootlegger Kamlesh Bhaiyya. Rai was attacked while conducting the raid and with internal politics in the police department, he got transferred as the Deputy Commissioner of Ahmedabad district. He is known to meet applicants in person during this time. The members from Dalit community have been complaining for many years that even though the government would allot them land, it was always under the control of someone else and no actions were being taken on this issue.

But DCP Rai began to arrest those who were squatting on the land of Dalits, and it was for the first time a police officer was taking such actions. But Rai’s stint in Ahmedabad as DCP didn’t last long and was transferred to Surat as the DSP. Valsad has been known as the entry point for bootleggers to smuggle alcohol into the state. Rai, along with IGP Shamsher Singh prepared a strategy to tackle this menace, which led them to the alcohol brewing factories at Daman.

The state government, which on one hand tom-toms about the implementation of prohibition in Gujarat, realized that they might have made a grave mistake letting loose this cop on the rampant bootlegging. As a result, Rai was moved to the Intelligence Bureau as the DCP. Ever since the role of top police officials has come out in the open in the infamous Bitcoin Extortion case, the post of Amreli Police’s SP has been lying vacant. Gujarat Police, looking forward to cleansing its image, have now moved Rai to Amreli Police as its new SP. This is the sixth transfer handed over to Rai in the last six years. An upright policeman, he is known for never trying to close ranks with top cops or leaders and even flatly declines whenever is instructed to act against the rulebook by the political leaders or even his seniors. Now it is to be seen how long does Rai remain on crease here at Amreli.
