MeraNews Network, Surat: The Anti-Terrorist Squad had on Friday arrested a Bihar native who was allegedly a Naxalite wanted in at least 50 cases in his home state and carried a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head by the Bihar government. But his is not the first case of Naxalites being caught operating discreetly in Gujarat, especially in Surat and South Gujarat.

In the year 2010, a complaint was filed against alleged Naxalites at Kamrej Police Station in Surat. So far the cops have been able to track and arrest 22 such individuals, but haven’t been able to nab one Seema Hira, who is one of the most wanted ones.

The then Surat Range IGP AK Singh (currently city police commissioner of Ahmedabad) was the one to have kick-started the operation to nab people who were believed to be Naxalites. The RR Cell, which was tasked with the investigation into the matter had seized several kinds of literature on Naxalism during its raids and the then Sub-inspector with had become the complainant in the matter.

It has been believed that the most wanted individual Seema Hira is currently residing in Mumbai, and is known for his deception by changing his looks and attire within a span of minutes, which makes it difficult for the cops to catch him.

Similarly, the Surat Range Police had got a tip about a Naxalite camp being active in Surat’s Limbayat area, where probable candidates were being brainwashed by exposing them to Naxal literature and songs.

In 2009, a couple along with seven other individuals had moved to Hajira in Surat to escape the police after being active Naxalites in other states. They were working as labourers in the area. They were arrested by the Surat Crime Branch after the then DCP Subhash Trivedi (currently Junagadh Range IGP) and then PSI RR Sarvaiya (currently) had received a tip about their presence. These people were not active at that time.

It is said that individuals who break off from Naxalism face danger to their lives from other Naxalites, which forces them to live with fake identities. They fear to reveal their real identities for getting picked up by cops too. The recent case was a similar one too.
