Surat: The Income Tax department has begun meeting trader bodies and unions in the city from with instructions to make their tax payments on time and appealed to them that they should make advance tax payments for their own good.

The IT department on Monday visited Abhishek Market and Surat Textile Market to meet the traders, where they gave instructions to them for making tax payments on time to avoid facing punitive action. On Tuesday the met traders at Silk City Market troubled with the Goods and Service Tax (GST) implementation to troubleshoot their issues. In the previous financial year, the traders had paid about Rs500 crores in taxes, while the current FY saw them making only Rs225 crores in taxes.

The IT department is trying to fulfil its target for the FY 2018-19. The department appealed to the traders’ bodies and groups in their meetings to make advance tax payments for their own good and also to provide the GST department with information their profits and losses.
