Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government on Wednesday extended the term of Vigilance Commissioner H.K. Das by one year, and thus ruining the chances of Additional Chief Secretary to the state home ministry M.S. Dagur, who will be retiring on July 30 this year. Das, who is 1980-batch Gujarat cadre IAS officer, had recently retired on June 30, but with this extension, he will continue to hold his post for another year.

Das was made the Vigilance Commissioner in March 2016, i.e. after he retired from government services in April 2015. After Das retired on June 30, the additional charge of the vigilance department was given to Dagur. About to retire on 30 July, Dagur was aspirational about bagging the post of Vigilance Commissioner and even his good friend chief secretary J.N Singh was leaving no stone unturned in his attempts at ensuring Dagur landing the plum post. But the state government probably had other plans.

Dagur had got the Additional Chief Secretary's post in the Home Department given his close friendship with Chief Secretary of Gujarat J.N. Singh. But Dagur didn’t share warm relations with Nikhil Bhatt, the joint secretary in the same department. The government was unhappy with Dagur as he had launched a string of investigations on Bhatt, but it had no alternative option for Dagur and thus was retained in his post.
