Surat: The Surat police on Thursday registered a first-information report (FIR) against Hardik Patel and other members of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) for disrupting traffic and public life on Mangarh Road on Wednesday.

“The Varachha police have registered a complaint against Hardik Patel and other PAAS supporters who organized a rally illegally and disturbed traffic, even though the police had warned them,” said Surat assistant police commissioner J.K. Pandya, adding that they have been booked under sections 143, 145, 149, 152 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) that relate to unlawful assembly and assaulting or obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duty.

The FIR states that Patel, eight other PAAS leaders and 150-200 supporters held a rally at Mangarh chowk in Surat’s Varachha area despite police orders.

Patel and others had gathered outside when four PAAS members were being released from custody in connection with an attack on Ashwin Sankadsheriya, the person who allegedly released private videos of the PAAS convenor and other leaders of the organization in November and December ahead of the Gujarat assembly elections.

In another development, the Surat police detained Gopal Italiya, who threw a shoe at Gujarat home minister Pradipsinh Jadeja in the state assembly last year, and eight of his supporters for protesting outside a function that was attended by education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama.
