Ahmedabad: Gujarat Police’s CID Crime department, which is investigating the infamous Bitcoin extortion case of a Surat builder, has begun recording the statements of all the witnesses in the case under section 164 of CrPC, in the presence of a magistrate. The reason behind this exercise is that the CID fears that once these high ranking cops involved in the case get out on bail, they will definitely try to lure the witnesses on their side and have them change their stance at hearings from the statements they had spoken to the investigators.
Except for former Dhari MLA Nalin Kotadia, most of the accused in the case have been arrested by the CID. Only the absconding constables of Amreli Police, who were a part of the team that kidnapped Surat-based builder Shailesh Bhatt, are remaining to be arrested. An identification parade of the witnesses too was conducted.
According to sources, so far 12 witnesses have been made to record their statements in the presence of a magistrate. Kotadia had in a letter to the CID asked them to provide him time till May 12 to appear before them. But so far he has not shown up. If he fails to appear before them on the May 12, the CID will procure an arrest warrant against him from the court.
